In her revealing and witty memoir, Carole Bayer Sager proves that not only is she one of America's greatest female songwriters but she is also an excellent storyteller. Spanning 70 years, Ms Bayer Sager chronicles her life from her early years as a school teacher to her amazing career as a singer/songwriter. She is very honest when it comes to writing about her marriages; especially her marriage to the equally talented Burt Bacharach.

Ms Bayer Sager devotes a large portion of her book to her songwriting and her collaborations with some of the music industries greatest artists such as Peter Allen, Marvin Hamlisch, Carly Simon, Carol King, Clint Eastwood and of course Burt Bacharach. I found her description of her creative process when it comes to songwriting fascinating.

Ms Bayer Sager never takes herself too seriously and is very open when it comes to her struggles with body image and self esteem. Overall she has succeeded in delivering a very honest, witty and entertaining memoir.
I have read hundreds of memoirs/biographies over the past 20 years and 'They're Playing Our Song' easily finds its place in my top 10 favourites.
My only disappointment is that it was all over too quickly.
An honest look at this wonderful songwriters life with all her flaws and brightness. I found I could relate to many of her insecurities but found hope and peace as she did with someone who truly loves her. We all deserve that !
I bought this book because Carole was married to Burt Bacharach and I was curious about their relationship. I found this book to be much more than I expected as it is well-written with many stories about her celebrity friends - especially Elizabeth Taylor. I did not know she was such a wonderful lyrics writer either. This is one of the best celebrity memoirs I have ever read and I have read many of them. I did not want it to end. She has led a life that you can only dream about.
Always been a big fan of Carol Bayer Sager - what a talented woman! Thoroughly enjoyed this book...stories of her struggles, her successes, some failures, her family & romantic relationships, working with well-known stars. Turns out that she was a pretty normal human in that world of not-so-normal entertainers. I think many people will relate to her story, esp her insecurities. Who knew? Easy to read. I devoured it - didn't want to put it down.
What an incredible book. This definitely isn't a memoir that recounts all the successes and glorious moments of her career and journey. if you want to read an authentic honest memoir that shows flaws, triumphs, mistakes, vulnerability, humility, and heart...this is definitely the book. for some that may think they know her through her music, you will see a whole another side of this accomplished woman. couldn't put it down and if i had the time i would have read it in one sitting.
Frothy memoir of a talented songwriter who worked with many of the greatest musical artists of our time. It has some interesting bits, revealing her life during the "hit years". Sager shows grace and restraint when discussing various people, especially her second husband, Burt Bacharach. Somehow I think she could have been a lot more critical, but she is not. If you are looking for an afternoon spent reading a book that is much like People magazine, you will enjoy this book. It is enjoyable, and it certainly depicts a time in music that has mostly passed.
I met Carole Bayer Sager early in my career, when we both worked on a couple of Peter Allen albums (she as co-writer of many of the songs, and I as the producer). We'd actually attended The High School of Music & Art at the same time, but we didn't know each other back then. I later became a staff producer at Capitol Records, and RCA, so I knew many of the stories referred to in this book, and was aware of the immense success that she attained as a hit songwriter. What I DIDN'T know was much of the background revealed here, so I found the "read" fascinating. The vulnerability, and honesty with which Carole wrote her story is both very entertaining, and moving. It seems almost impossible to believe that someone with the type of friendships that she developed (Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson, Carley Simon, Carol King, Barbra Streisand, and many others) would have had any insecurities, but the book goes on to beautifully explain the challenges that she conquered in her monumentally successful life, and career.
Towards the end of the book, after many of the celebrity stories, some very personal insight is provided which explains quite a bit of the psychological makeup of this fascinating writer. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and congratulate Carole Bayer Sager on the great book she wrote, and even greater life that she has led.
