Unmade The Lynburn Legacy Book 3 Sarah Rees Brennan Books
Originally posted to Nori's Closet (http://noriscloset.blogspot.com/2014/09/unmade-by-sarah-rees-brennan.html)Ahhhhh. I don’t even know what to do now that this series is over. As I said on Goodreads, this book and this series is the kind you finish with a big exhale and sloppy smile. And then you feel the need to clutch the book itself to your chest in a weird, youthful book hug, not wanting to ever let it go.
Unspoken was my favorite book of 2012. Untold was one of my favorites of 2013. And now Unmade is also up there on my list for 2014. Reading this book was just so refreshing. It was like having my first pumpkin spice latte of the fall. It was like a really great phone conversation with my mother. And it was like meeting up with old friends I haven’t seen for a while, but am always wanting to see.
Brennan has character development down. There are few YA writers out there who can write characters like she can. All of the side characters own a piece of my heart. And Kami like is my heart. Then of course is the problematic romance. I love that this defies the YA paranormal romance stereotypes. Nothing is easy for the ship of all ships. And I like that the couple has problems. Things go from one insanely sizzling, button popping scene to moments of pure heartache. And I feel like this is so quintessential teen. This is real. It’s not about finding your soul mate at 16 and never having any problems. It’s about not knowing what the person you’re in love with is thinking (usually). It’s about changing your mind and not always thinking with your mind.
This book definitely gave me a case of the feels. Not everyone survives by the end. It’s definitely a lot darker than it’s previous books. There’s kidnappings, torture, grave digging, public sacrifice rituals, death, and lot of power struggles. There’s also a lot more relationship drama. There’s more danger for Kami’s little siblings. There’s more family drama between Kami’s parents. Yet, through all the drama and all the darkness, the same wit and humor pulled through everything. In fact, I think this was the funniest and snarkiest book of the series.
I found myself laughing out loud one moment, gasping in shock in another moment, crying for a wonderful character at another moment, and just having the full gamut of emotions here. Brennan is the kind of writer who holds the puppet strings to your feelings, and she’s not afraid to pull the strings tight enough to induce pain.
As with the other books, I found the plot/action to be nowhere near as great as the character development, dialog, and drama. Sometimes, I just don’t care as much about the plot as I do about the people, and that’s okay. I definitely care more about the characters in this series than I do for most other fictional characters, and that in itself is saying something. I am so beyond attached to these guys.
I’m so sad the whole thing is over. I’ve actually already gone back and re-read my favorite moments (definitely including the button popping scene!). And now I’m contemplating re-reading some scenes for a third time. The book is sitting right next to me. I don’t really have to say goodbye quite yet. I give this book and this series a 10/10.

Unmade The Lynburn Legacy Book 3 Sarah Rees Brennan Books Reviews
Spoilers ahead! This is a review of book 3 in Sarah Rees Brennan's humorous and exciting Lynburn Legacy.
Cons
Kami's relationship with Jared becoming a bit codependent and unhealthy when they were relinked. They did so well being unlinked, and then they regressed a bit. Which was rather sad.
The nicknames Kami gave Jared were confusing and a bit annoying.
The infighting and misunderstandings between Kami, Ash and Jared were rather annoying and disappointing.
Pros
I loved how Kami finally understood and accepted Ash being brave despite his terror. I adored her reconciliation with her mother.
Jon Glass is amazing! I loved his humour, courage and incredible love for his family. Ten and Tomo are adorable.
Holly. My girl. So sweet, vulnerable and strong. Her reconciliation with Angela was so moving. I cheered for Holly so much.
What happened to Rusty was heartbreaking...
Angela was amazing. Loved her fierce loyalty to her brother and friends.
The action is exciting and fast paced. There's a sensitive depiction of non white and GLBT characters, and the prose is beautiful and poetic - haunting and suspenseful. A worthy end to the trilogy with a satisfying ending.
Sorry-in-the-Vale has come under siege, with Rob Lynburn taking control of Aurimere and demanding the town offer him a sacrifice. To defeat him, Kami has become Ash’s source. In the aftermath of battle, Jared, the boy she’d been linked to her whole life, gave himself over to Rob to save Kami’s brother and his aunt. Unwilling to accept she’s lost Jared forever, Kami will do anything to get him back. With more people succumbing to Rob’s will, Kami is more desperate than ever to save her town. When Kami discovers a way to gain more power in order defeat Rob, she must decide how much she’s willing to give up, because defeating him may cost her everything.
Unmade is the gripping conclusion to Sarah Rees Brennan’s Lynburn Legacy series. I’ve been holding on to this book for the past year because I wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to this amazing series. Brennan is highly skilled when it comes to writing complex characters. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how each character has evolved over the course of three books, how small characters have become an intricate part of the story, and how characters you found off-putting have become ones you can’t help but like. Kami has come a long way since the beginning pages of Unspoken, when she was just a girl with an insatiable hunger for the truth and a drive that was infectious. Sacrifice has been an important theme throughout the series, and in this final book Kami must decide what she’s willing to give up in order to save the people she loves.
Jared is another character who has undergone a lot of changes, and his character development is perhaps the most rewarding. He’s always considered himself unworthy of being loved and struggled to connect with the members of his family when he’s always felt like an outsider among them. Throughout the course of the series, Jared has leaned to care about other people beside Kami, to see the value in others, and eventually finds his own worth apart from the girl who once defined his entire world. Brennan really knows how to let secondary characters shine. The people in Kami’s life are more than placeholders, they have real fears and desires; sometimes you agree with them and sometimes you don’t, but they are all incredibly well-developed. They exist on their own apart from the protagonist and I love seeing everyone interact with one another. From the wonderful friendship between Kami and Angela to the humorous interactions between Jon Glass and Lillian Lynburn, there’s something to love about any number of combination of characters.
My only real criticism for this final book is that these characters have been through so much, they’ve had to make sacrifices and lost people they loved, and I felt they deserved more than a chapter or two of happiness. Sarah Rees Brennan has an amazing ability to make you laugh and cry in the span of a single page, to make you smile and break your heart at the same time with this final book being no exception. I’ve enjoyed Kami’s journey immensely and am looking forward to Brennan’s future projects.
